The
Burnham Family Farm dates back to the early 1800's when William and Eleanor
Tillinghast received 160 acres of land in the Firelands of Ohio. They received
this grant because of their homestead in Connecticut was burned during the
Revolutionary War. It was not until 1826 that William's son O.C. traveled
to Ohio to clear the land for farming. The house that currently sits on
the land was built by O.C.. In the early 1900's Joseph Burnham II
(pictured). Married Margaret Tillinghast, and they became owners of the
farm. Later their son Oliver was involved with the farm and planted the
1st commercial orchard of 14 acres of apples and 6 acres of peaches.
Although he held another job, Oliver was keenly interested in the orchard
business especially with peaches. It wasn't until Joseph III began
operating the farm full time some 40 years ago that the transition into today's
operation occurred. Fruit became a focal point under his direction.
Over the years nearby land was added to expand the operation which today
includes over 35 acres of peaches, 200 acres of apples and some 600 acres of
additional land.
The operation has always prided itself on giving consumers a high
quality product along with being on the cutting edge of new varieties.
They were one of the 1st to bring the Fuji Apple to Ohio.
Currently, the Honeycrisp apple is of great interest because of its
superior eating qualities. There has been extensive planting of this variety
to be able to bring superior quality fruit to the consumer.
